A Boy and His Dream Foundation ("the Foundation") is a non-profit organisation registered under Section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code and holds Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The Foundation works alongside children, young people, families, and communities in the United States and Nigeria, delivering programmes across nutrition, education, and community development.

The Foundation recognises the right to privacy as a fundamental human right, as affirmed in Article 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 16 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This Privacy Policy sets out how the Foundation collects, uses, safeguards, and shares personal information obtained through its website, its programmes, and its partnerships.
 

1. Guiding Principles

The Foundation is guided by the following principles in all matters relating to personal information:

  • The best interests of the child shall be a primary consideration in every decision involving beneficiary data, in line with Article 3 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

  • Personal information shall be collected and processed lawfully, fairly, and only for clearly defined purposes consistent with the Foundation's mandate.

  • The dignity, safety, and agency of every individual whose information is held by the Foundation shall be respected at all times.

  • Data minimisation, informed consent, and purpose limitation shall govern all data-related practices of the Foundation and its partners.
     

2. Safeguarding of Children and Beneficiaries

The Foundation places the safeguarding of children and vulnerable beneficiaries at the centre of this Policy, in line with the standards expected of civil society organisations in consultative status with ECOSOC and the Foundation's obligations under international child rights instruments.

  • Informed and documented consent shall be obtained from parents or legal guardians prior to the collection, use, or publication of any child's image, name, voice, or personal story.

  • Children of an age and maturity to express their views shall also be consulted, in keeping with Article 12 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

  • Consent may be withdrawn at any time. The Foundation shall take reasonable steps to remove the relevant content within a reasonable period.

  • The Foundation shall not publish the full names of minors together with identifying information about their location, school, or family circumstances.

  • No image, story, or record shall be used in a manner that compromises the dignity, safety, or future opportunities of any child or beneficiary.

  • The Foundation's staff, volunteers, partners, and contractors are required to observe these safeguarding standards in all forms of communication and reporting.
     

3. Categories of Information Collected

Depending on the nature of engagement, the Foundation may collect the following categories of personal information:

  • Donors and supporters: name, contact details, postal address, and payment information processed through secure third-party platforms.

  • Volunteers, interns, and partners: name, contact details, organisational affiliation, professional background, and areas of interest.

  • Programme participants and beneficiaries: name, age group, general location, photographs, audio-visual material, and personal narratives, collected in accordance with the safeguarding standards set out in Section 2.

  • Website users: IP address, device and browser information, pages accessed, and cookie data collected through standard web analytics.
     

4. Purposes of Processing

Personal information is used solely for purposes consistent with the Foundation's mandate, including:

  • Design, delivery, and monitoring of the Foundation's programmes.

  • Acknowledgement of donations and maintenance of donor records.

  • Reporting to institutional partners, funders, and the United Nations system.

  • Communication regarding the Foundation's activities, events, and appeals.

  • Communication of programme impact through the Foundation's website, publications, and social media, within the safeguards described above.

  • Improvement of the Foundation's website and digital services.
     

5. Disclosure and Sharing of Information

The Foundation does not sell, rent, or trade personal information under any circumstances. Personal information may be shared, on a strictly limited basis, only with:

  • Payment processors engaged for the handling of donations.

  • Auditors and regulators, where such disclosure is required by law.

  • United Nations bodies and institutional partners for the purposes of reporting, in aggregated or anonymised form wherever practicable.

Any transfer of personal information to third parties shall be governed by binding confidentiality and data protection obligations.
 

6. Data Security and Retention

The Foundation applies reasonable technical, administrative, and physical measures to protect personal information against unauthorised access, disclosure, alteration, or loss. Personal information is retained only for the period necessary to fulfil the purpose for which it was collected, or as required by law and institutional reporting obligations.
 

7. Rights of Individuals

Every individual whose information is held by the Foundation has the right to:

  • Access the personal information held about them.

  • Request correction of any inaccurate or incomplete information.

  • Withdraw consent to further processing.

  • Request deletion of their personal information, subject to legal, audit, and reporting obligations.

Parents and legal guardians may exercise these rights on behalf of children whose information appears in the Foundation's materials.

The Foundation's website uses cookies and standard analytics tools to understand how visitors engage with the site. The website may also integrate donation platforms and social media plugins, each of which is governed by its own privacy policy.
 

9. International Transfers of Information

Given that the Foundation operates across the United States, Nigeria, and through partnerships within the United Nations system, personal information may be transferred and stored across different jurisdictions. Such transfers shall be undertaken with appropriate safeguards and with due regard to applicable data protection standards.
